BACKFLOW TESTING
Are you familiar with backflow? If you’re a homeowner, you should be.
Backflow means just that – water flows back in the direction it came from, not where you want it to go.
The two main causes are pressure in the pipes and back-siphoning in the system. Often, these are not of concern. As an example, siphoning can occur when there’s a fire in your neighborhood and the temporary loss of water used to address the fire drops the pressure and causes back-siphoning. Back pressure can occur when there is less water pressure at the source than inside pipes.
But when it is not temporary and left unchecked, contaminated water can flow back into the main city water system, and this can include pesticides, human waste, fertilizers and other harmful matter that eventually makes its way to consumers.
While this is everyone’s responsibility, it often falls on the homeowner for certified testing of backflow.
